Frequently Asked Questions

How much can my family get on my SSDI record?
Each eligible dependent (spouse or minor child) can receive up to 50% of your Primary Insurance Amount. However, the total for the whole family is capped by the family maximum, generally 150–180% of your PIA. Dependent benefits are reduced proportionally if they exceed that cap.
Who counts as an eligible dependent?
Typically your unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if still in high school, or any age if disabled before 22), and a spouse caring for your child under 16 or a disabled child. Divorced spouses may qualify in some cases.
What is the SSDI family maximum?
It is the ceiling on total monthly benefits payable on one worker's record. For SSDI it is roughly 150–180% of the worker's PIA. When the family's combined dependent benefits exceed the room under the cap, they are cut proportionally — but never the worker's own benefit.
How does this compare to Canada's children's benefit?
US dependent benefits are a percentage of your benefit and are capped by the family maximum. Canada's CPP-D pays a flat amount per child with no family-maximum reduction, so a large family may fare differently under each system.
