Ontario's demerit point system runs from 0 to 15. At 9–14 points, the MTO sends a warning letter. At 15 points, your licence is suspended for 30 days (full licence holders). New drivers (G1/G2) face suspension at 6 points. Points stay on your record for 2 years from the offence date.

Yes. Insurance companies access your driving record, and convictions (not just demerit points) typically trigger premium increases. A minor conviction may raise premiums 10–25%; a serious conviction (stunt driving, DUI) can increase rates 50–200% or result in non-renewal.

In most provinces, demerit points remain on your record for 2 years from the offence date (not the conviction date). After 2 years they are removed automatically. However, the underlying conviction may remain on your driving record for 3 years or longer, which insurers can still see.
