Frequently Asked Questions

What is a state supplementary payment?
Most states add a supplement (SSP) on top of the federal SSI benefit for people with disabilities. The amount depends on your state and living arrangement. Some states administer their own supplement; a few pay none at all.
How does living arrangement affect SSI?
If you live in someone else's household and receive free food or shelter (in-kind support), your federal SSI can be reduced by up to one-third. People in Medicaid-funded facilities may receive a much smaller personal-needs amount.
Is this the same as SSDI?
No. This estimates needs-based SSI plus a state supplement. SSDI is a separate, contribution-based benefit with no state supplement and no resource limits. Some people receive both SSI and SSDI (concurrent benefits).
Do these amounts change annually?
Yes. The federal benefit rate rises each year with the cost-of-living adjustment, and states periodically revise their supplements. Treat this as a current-year estimate.
