Frequently Asked Questions

How is SSI different from SSDI?
SSI is needs-based: it pays a flat federal benefit rate to people with limited income and resources, regardless of work history. SSDI is an earned insurance benefit based on your payroll contributions. SSI counts your income and assets; SSDI does not.
How does income reduce my SSI payment?
Social Security ignores the first $20 of most income and the first $65 of earned income, then counts only half of remaining earnings. Your countable income is subtracted from the federal benefit rate. If countable income reaches the FBR, your federal SSI drops to zero.
What are the SSI resource limits?
To qualify for SSI you generally cannot have more than $2,000 in countable resources as an individual, or $3,000 as a couple. Your home and one vehicle are typically excluded. These limits have not changed in many years.
Can I get a state supplement on top of SSI?
Yes. Most states add a supplementary payment to the federal SSI amount. The amount varies by state and living arrangement, and some states administer it themselves. Enter your state supplement to include it in the estimate.
