Frequently Asked Questions

Is CPP Disability more than early CPP retirement?
Usually yes, before age 65. CPP-D includes a flat-rate portion and is not reduced for early receipt, while CPP retirement taken before 65 is reduced 0.6% for each month early (up to 36% at age 60). CPP-D typically pays more if you qualify.
What happens to CPP-D at age 65?
At 65 your CPP-D automatically converts to a CPP retirement pension. The retirement amount is calculated without the early-retirement reduction, so it is usually higher than if you had taken retirement early at 60.
Can I switch from early CPP retirement to CPP-D?
Only in limited circumstances. If you have been receiving CPP retirement for fewer than 15 months and become disabled, you may be able to switch to CPP-D. After that window, you generally cannot.
Do these figures change annually?
Yes. CPP amounts are indexed to inflation and the early-retirement reduction factor is fixed by legislation. Treat these as current-year estimates.
