One of the most underused tools in legal SEO is right in front of you: your competitors' websites. Every firm ranking above you in Google or appearing in ChatGPT answers has done something right. They have content you do not have, or backlinks you have not earned, or technical implementations you have not made. A systematic competitor analysis tells you exactly what that is — and gives you a concrete roadmap for overtaking them.

Step One: Identify Your Actual SEO Competitors

This is where most firms make their first mistake. They identify competitors based on who they see in court, who advertises on billboards, or who they have lost clients to. But your SEO competitors are whoever is currently ranking for the keywords your prospective clients use — and that list may surprise you. Search your top five practice area keywords in Google right now. Who is on page one? Those firms are your actual SEO competition for that query.

Then do the same in ChatGPT. Ask "who are the best personal injury lawyers in [your city]?" or "recommend a criminal defense attorney in [your area]." The firms that appear in those AI responses have built the entity signals and content authority that you need to match and exceed. Some of them may be small firms you have never heard of — firms that invested in their digital presence while you were focused elsewhere.

What to Analyse in a Competitor's Website

Content Depth and Coverage

Count their pages. Check the depth of their practice area content — are they covering sub-topics in detail or just surface-level? Look for content types you are missing: case results, attorney bios with significant detail, educational guides, FAQ pages, blog content with regular publishing cadence. Any content category they have that you do not is a gap you can fill.

Backlink Profile

Use a tool like Ahrefs, SEMrush, or Moz to see who is linking to your competitors. Legal-specific backlinks from bar associations, local news mentions, legal publications, and business journals carry significant authority. If a competitor has 40 backlinks from local news sites and you have three, that is a meaningful authority gap — and local media coverage is something you can actively pursue with a PR strategy.

Schema Implementation

Use Google's Rich Results Test on your competitors' pages to see what structured data they have implemented. If they have FAQPage schema on their practice area pages and you do not, that is a quick technical win. If they have Attorney and LegalService schema and you do not, fixing that should be a priority. Schema implementation gaps are often the fastest wins in a competitor analysis.

Google Business Profile

Check your competitors' GBP listings. How many reviews do they have? How recently have they been updated? Do they have photos, posts, Q&A responses? If a competitor has 120 reviews and you have 18, your local search authority gap is significant — and reviews are something you can systematically address with a client feedback programme.

Turning Analysis Into an Action Plan

Do not try to do everything at once. Prioritise the gaps that represent the biggest opportunity relative to the effort required. Quick wins: add missing schema markup, complete your Google Business Profile, add attorney bio details. Medium-term: build out missing content categories. Long-term: pursue backlinks through local PR, speaking engagements, and professional association involvement.

Build a six-month content and technical roadmap based on what you find. If your top competitor has 45 practice area pages and you have 12, you know what your content priority is. If they have clean Core Web Vitals and your site loads in 5 seconds, you have a technical priority that may be the single biggest limiting factor on your visibility.
