Frequently Asked Questions

How much is VA disability per month?
Monthly VA compensation depends on your combined rating and dependents. At the current-year rate a single veteran receives about $171 at 10%, $524 at 30%, $1,075 at 50%, $1,716 at 70%, and $3,738 at 100%. Payments are tax-free and updated annually for cost of living.
Do dependents increase my VA compensation?
Yes, but only at a combined rating of 30% or higher. At 30% and above the VA adds fixed amounts for a spouse, each child under 18, and each dependent parent. Below 30% your rate is the veteran-alone amount regardless of family size.
Is VA disability compensation taxable?
No. VA disability compensation is completely exempt from federal and state income tax. You do not report it as income. This is a key difference from military retired pay, which is generally taxable.
How often do VA compensation rates change?
VA rates are adjusted every December 1 by the same cost-of-living adjustment applied to Social Security. This estimator uses the current-year rate table, which is updated annually, so verify the exact figures against the latest VA rate tables.
