Frequently Asked Questions

How is my SSDI benefit calculated?
SSDI is based on your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME) over your working life, not your current income or assets. Social Security applies a three-tier PIA formula: 90% of the first band of AIME, 32% of the middle band, and 15% above the upper bend point. The result is your Primary Insurance Amount (PIA), rounded down to the monthly benefit.
Does my household income or savings affect SSDI?
No. SSDI is an earned insurance benefit funded by your payroll taxes (FICA). Unlike SSI, it is not needs-based, so your spouse's income, your savings, and your assets do not reduce it. Only your own work earnings above the Substantial Gainful Activity limit can affect eligibility.
When do SSDI payments start?
There is a mandatory 5-month waiting period measured from your established disability onset date. Your first payment covers the 6th full month after onset. Back pay may cover the retroactive period between onset (plus the waiting period) and your approval.
Do SSDI rates change every year?
Yes. The bend points, maximum benefit, and payment amounts are adjusted annually for inflation through a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) and national wage indexing. Treat this figure as a current-year estimate.
