Frequently Asked Questions

Are inherited IRAs taxable in the US?
A traditional IRA or 401(k) is income in respect of a decedent (IRD). Distributions to heirs are taxed as ordinary income at the beneficiary's rate. Roth IRAs are generally income-tax-free to heirs. The account itself is also included in the decedent's gross estate for estate-tax purposes.
What is the 10-year rule for inherited IRAs?
Under the SECURE Act, most non-spouse beneficiaries must fully withdraw an inherited IRA or 401(k) within 10 years of the owner's death. There is no longer a lifetime 'stretch' for most heirs. Spouses and certain eligible designated beneficiaries (minor children, disabled, chronically ill) have more favorable options.
Can an inherited retirement account be taxed twice?
Yes. A large IRA can face both federal estate tax (if the estate exceeds the exemption) and income tax when the heir withdraws the funds. An IRD income tax deduction (IRC 691(c)) partially offsets the double tax by letting heirs deduct the estate tax attributable to the IRD.
How can I reduce tax on retirement accounts at death?
Options include naming a spouse (who can roll the account into their own IRA and defer), doing Roth conversions during life so heirs inherit tax-free, using qualified charitable distributions, and spreading withdrawals across the 10-year window to avoid bunching income into high-tax years. Beneficiary designations should be reviewed regularly.
