Assisted Living Cost Calculator — United States

The 2024 national median is about $5,350 per month ($64,200/year) for base assisted living, before add-ons. Costs range from around $4,000/month in lower-cost states to $6,500+/month in California, New York, and the Northeast. Memory care typically adds $1,500-$2,500/month.

Medicaid does not cover room and board in assisted living. Some states use Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) waivers to cover the care portion for eligible low-income residents, but these often have waiting lists and do not pay the rent. Most families pay privately or use LTC insurance.

Assisted living provides housing, meals, and help with daily activities for people who do not need constant medical care. Nursing homes provide 24-hour skilled nursing for people with significant medical needs and are far more expensive. Medicaid coverage is broader for nursing homes than assisted living.

Memory care (specialized dementia care within assisted living) typically costs $1,500 to $2,500 per month more than standard assisted living, reflecting secured units and higher staffing. Total memory care often runs $6,000-$9,000+ per month depending on location.
