Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) in Canada?
MNI is the minimum household income IRCC requires to sponsor parents or grandparents. It equals the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) plus 30 percent, based on your family size, and must be met for each of the three tax years before you apply.
Do I need to prove income to sponsor my spouse?
No. Sponsoring a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner, or a dependent child generally has no minimum income requirement outside Quebec. You must still show you are not receiving social assistance other than for a disability.
Can I combine income with a co-signer?
Yes. Your spouse or common-law partner can co-sign a Parents and Grandparents sponsorship, and their income is added to yours to meet the MNI. The co-signer shares the sponsorship undertaking obligations.
How is family size counted for MNI?
Family size includes you, your spouse or partner, your dependent children, the persons you are sponsoring and their dependents, plus anyone you previously sponsored and are still financially responsible for.
