Who gets the Canada Child Benefit after separation?
The parent who is the 'primarily responsible' caregiver receives the CCB. This is usually the parent with the majority of parenting time. In shared custody (40–60% each), the CRA splits the CCB equally between both parents — each receives half the monthly payment.
Can both parents claim the eligible dependent credit?
No. Only one parent can claim the 'eligible dependent' (formerly 'equivalent-to-spouse') credit per child. If only one parent is entitled to claim (primary residence), they get the credit. If parenting time is shared, parents can agree who claims it — or each claims a different child if there are multiple children. If they can't agree, neither can claim it.
How does separation affect the GST/HST credit?
After separation, each former spouse becomes eligible for their own GST/HST credit based on their individual income. You should notify the CRA of your change in marital status as soon as possible. The credit is based on your net income and family size.
